Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship

Delivering Advanced Clinical Training in Addiction Psychiatry

There has never been a more important time to increase access to treatment for substance use disorders and advance clinical care, education and research in addiction. The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is uniquely positioned to provide evidence-based addiction training in a broad array of clinical settings.

The program is principally focused on serving people who have been historically underserved, combined with the teaching and mentorship of a vibrant community of experts across UT. In addition to becoming highly skilled clinicians, addiction fellowship graduates become leaders in education, research and policy to transform the delivery of treatment and system of care.

The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. In addition, there are numerous opportunities to pursue addiction research and scholarly interests throughout Dell Med and UT, including the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction ResearchDepartment of NeuroscienceSteve Hicks School of Social Work and College of Pharmacy.

Training Facilities

Integral Care, the mental health authority for Austin-Travis County, is the major clinical training site for addiction psychiatry fellows through its substance use disorder treatment clinics and intensive outpatient program. Core rotations also include outpatient clinics and supportive outpatient programs at the VA Austin Outpatient Clinic, addiction psychiatry consultation at UT Health Austin and inpatient consult-liaison psychiatry at Dell Seton Medical Center.

Integral Care building.

Integral Care support adults and children living with mental illness, substance use disorder and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1967, it is the Local Mental Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority for Travis County. Substance use disorder rotations for fellows include the opioid treatment program (methadone clinic), buprenorphine clinics, an outpatient withdrawal clinic, and the intensive outpatient program. Treatment modalities include addiction pharmacotherapy, management of co-occurring psychiatric conditions and individual and group psychotherapy.

Austin outpatient clinic.

The Central Texas VA serves more than 2,300 veterans with substance use disorder per year. Fellows rotate at the Austin Outpatient Clinic’s substance abuse treatment program, which also serves as a psychology internship training program. Clinical training includes management of addiction and co-occurring psychiatric conditions and longitudinal experience in a multi-phase supportive outpatient program delivering evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy.

UT Health Austin offers primary care and specialty services designed and managed by faculty and staff of Dell Medical School. Fellows rotate as addiction psychiatry consultants, which could include clinics such as primary care, women’s health, geriatrics, musculoskeletal, oncology and other specialty clinics.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center, recently named the one of the top 10 most socially responsible hospitals in America, serves as the primary teaching hospital for Dell Med. Fellows rotate as part of the consultation-liaison psychiatry service, which includes a proactive service screening all people admitted to the hospital who might benefit from consultation as well as a multidisciplinary inpatient buprenorphine team.
