Transitional Residency

Preparing Physicians for Advanced Subspecialty Training

The Transitional Residency at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is structured to give residents broad exposure to the basic areas of medicine to provide fundamental skills training. This popular and competitive program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has been in existence since 1983.

The Transitional Residency program is jointly affiliated with Dell Med’s departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Training Facilities

Rotations are completed at the new Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and other associated clinics.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton, recently named the one of the top 10 most socially responsible hospitals in America, is one of four teaching hospitals for Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Here, doctors train other doctors, conduct groundbreaking research and implement new treatments. The internal medicine, emergency medicine, neurology and surgery rotations are all completed at this site.

Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas.

Serving a 46-county area, Dell Children’s is the premier health care provider for children and adolescents in Central Texas. Dell Children’s is the only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in Central Texas and one of only five in the state. Pediatric wards month and pediatric emergency medicine month are completed at this site.

About the Application Process

The program receives about 900 applications and interviews about 75 candidates each year to fill six positions.

Exposure to Various Areas of Medicine

Residents rotate through internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine, neurology or psychiatry and specialties.
