Welcome to the Transitional Residency program at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. On behalf of the faculty, residents and staff of our graduate medical education programs, thank you for your interest in our program. Our teaching staff represents a wide range of faculty from internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, neurology, psychiatry and pediatrics as well as other subspecialties, all of whom are dedicated to preparing our residents to become strong physicians during this critical year between medical school and subspecialty training.
During your year in Austin, you will focus on developing the skills needed to become outstanding generalists prior to entering your specialty training. Our residents bring a respect for diversity, a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the responsibility to their patients, along with a desire to learn and grow as physicians. The successful careers of our graduates are evidence that the residency meets its mission to lay the foundation of educational growth beyond just the first year of residency. While we have been preparing physicians for advanced residency positions in highly competitive disciplines for many decades, we are committed to constantly renewing our curriculum, our rotations and our approach to medical education on an ongoing basis to ensure an outstanding clinical training during your time here in Austin. Residents are active participants in their learning and evaluation process throughout their time with us, and we have a focus on residents as a team and cohesive group to help everyone learn and continually improve.
Here in Austin, Dell Med is a new institution dedicated to rethinking how we approach health care in a way that improves health outcomes for everyone in our community. Our Transitional Residency is an integral part of this mission, and we are committed to training a diverse group of physicians who will go on to their subspecialty training to make a positive impact in their chosen fields for all patients.
Choosing a residency is an important decision at an exciting time in your life and career. Many factors go into that choice: geography, needs and desires of your family or partner, program size, number of hospitals, patient population, resident autonomy, residency and faculty reputation and educational excellence. Austin is a dynamic, engaged and truly special place to spend a year. Many alumni are drawn back to Austin to help the community continually drive toward improved health and inclusion.
I hope you get a chance to interview here in Austin, and I look forward to meeting you and answering any questions you have. Please don’t hesitate to reach out during your application process.
