Education

Graduate Medical Education

The Pediatric Residency, led by program director Nalinda Charnsangavej, M.D., has a long history in Austin going back over 40 years. Trainees graduate well-prepared to provide health care in all settings, from primary care pediatrics to highly specialized care.

The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, which began in 2023 under the leadership of Paul Sheeran, M.D., provides trainees with superb education in rotations through the pediatric intensive care unit, cardiovascular intensive care unit and operating rooms.

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, led by program director Sujit Iyer, M.D., ensures that all fellows receive independent and supervised training and are supported to explore and gain experience in research, clinical training, teaching and advocacy.

The Pediatric Headache Fellowship provides fellows with high-quality clinical experience, personalized education and dedicated research opportunities to achieve individual academic goals under the leadership of Sam Irwin, MB BCh BAO.

The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship, from its start as a one-year program in 2010 through ACGME accreditation in 2020, focuses on training strong clinicians to lead pediatric hospital medicine in clinical care, scholarship, advocacy and education under the leadership of Lynn Thoreson, D.O.

The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship, which began in 2022 under the leadership Alan Groves, M.D., provides first-class training supported by 19 neonatology faculty members.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, led by program director Kari Whatley, M.D., provides fellows with specialized clinical training, initially started at Austin State Hospital in 1971.

The Child Neurology Residency mirrors Dell Med’s focus on developing innovative models of health care and education to prepare each physician for a variety of careers in the field of child neurology under the leadership of Stephen Deputy, M.D.

The Dermatology Residency, initially founded in 2008, provides training in pediatric dermatology. The program is now led by program director Ammar Ahmed, M.D., FAAD.

The Transitional Residency, which began in 1983, is led by program director Tim Ruttan, M.D., who ensures the continued success of the training program by focusing on diverse subspecialties.

Grand Rounds

The department hosts its Pediatric Grand Rounds event series on second and third Fridays, 7:30-8:30 a.m. via Zoom and at the Dell Children’s Signe Auditorium.
