Advancing Cancer Education, Research & Care

The Department of Oncology aims to advance care — and improve health outcomes — through a patient-centered enterprise strategy developed in partnership with the Central Texas cancer care community. The team puts its approach into practice at UT Health Austin’s Livestrong Cancer Institutes where renowned oncologists, researchers, clinicians and patient advisors provide compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care.

Areas of Focus

This includes: working with The University of Texas at Austin’s Steve Hicks School of Social Work to create multidisciplinary support teams that help local cancer patients and their families navigate care; working with the Department of Internal Medicine to prevent cancer and support patients faced with difficult decision-making; developing a program that meets the outpatient clinical care needs of young adults (ages 18-30), a vulnerable population with poor outcomes; and working with local people to improve access to exceptional cancer care.

The department expands, enhances and connects cancer research underway at UT Austin. Working with partners, the department is translating basic science research into tools and treatments to improve patient health outcomes, offering more high-quality clinical trials locally and focusing on precision medicine that personalizes cancer treatments based on the latest developments in molecular diagnostics.

Faculty in the Department of Oncology work in the Livestrong Cancer Institutes. Partners include the Livestrong Foundation, Ascension Seton and the Central Texas cancer care community.

Closely affiliated with the Department of Oncology are the Livestrong Cancer Institutes at Dell Medical School, which aim to rethink the full range of cancer care, from prevention to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and end-of-life care — all with a focus on the patient’s needs, values and preferences.
