Division of Hospital Medicine

The Division of Hospital Medicine at Dell Medical School delivers comprehensive inpatient care while advancing medical education, quality improvement, interdisciplinary collaboration and operational innovation.

As one of the largest divisions in the Department of Internal Medicine, we continue to grow in response to the evolving needs of patients, learners and the health system.

About

Led by Interim Division Chief Balu Lakshmanan, M.D., our faculty lead initiatives in patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration and operational excellence, while holding leadership roles across undergraduate and graduate medical education.

Education

Education is central to our mission. Faculty contribute to undergraduate and graduate medical education, faculty development and interprofessional training.

Research, scholarship and innovation

Faculty contribute to scholarship in medical education, quality improvement, patient safety, and health systems innovation, with work published and presented nationally in journals such as JAMA and Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Clinical services

We provide patient-centered inpatient care across multiple services, continuously adapting to increasing demand through innovation, efficiency and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Quality improvement and operations

The division prioritizes patient safety, workflow optimization and interdisciplinary coordination. Faculty lead efforts in patient throughput, communication, wellbeing and scalable models of inpatient care to support both clinical and educational excellence.
