The Department of Ophthalmology is committed to catalyzing research that makes a difference in the lives of those who suffer from ophthalmic disorders.
The department aims to produce research dedicated to the improvement and preservation of vision. Additionally, the department prioritizes research that seeks to improve the quality and outcomes of health care delivery for patients, systems and communities. Dell Med offers many opportunities for collaboration with the local tech industry and with University of Texas scientists (e.g. Center for Perceptual Systems). The department is also actively recruiting a wide range of clinical trials.
Research Initiatives
Advancing Clinical Knowledge in Ophthalmology
- Led by core faculty, the department works with enthusiastic medical students on multiple projects, ranging from blepharitis to retinopathy associated with plaquenil toxicity.
- The department is also actively involved in collaborative efforts and clinical trials with other UT Austin and Dell Med departments, as well as the private industry to advance ophthalmic research.
Addressing Disparities & Improving Patient Care Delivery in Ophthalmology
- Department faculty members are working on means to improve patient care, such as developing an efficient platform to educate patients with a knowledge and understanding of their respective ophthalmic illness(es).
- The department is also involved in understanding how patients make informed medical decisions and ways to improve compliance with prescribed regimens.
Research Committee
The mission of the Ophthalmology Research Committee, led by Harry Aung, is to provide structure, skills and resources to enable research that creates actionable knowledge from the community’s curiosity, expertise and devotion to improving eye health.
Committee members include Harry Aung, Eileen Bowden, Eric Crowell, Megan Geloneck, Randy Shepard and Philip Storey.
