Welcome to Dell Medical School’s Internal Medicine Residency! Residency is such a special time in a doctor’s personal and professional life. My goal is to help each resident find happiness and success in the practice of medicine. Our program’s vision is to inspire the next generation of great and innovative internists.

  • We care compassionately for all people.
  • We train well-rounded internists, preparing them to excel in any career they choose.
  • We create leaders invested in a high value health care system.
  • We catalyze just and equitable health in our local, national and global communities.
  • We learn and grow together as individuals, teams, and systems.

Clinical Excellence: We dedicate ourselves to the patients in our care and advocate for their needs. We listen to their stories, understand their values, speak their languages and empower them as partners in achieving their health goals. We are motivated by the challenges and complexity of patient care to learn the science of medicine and the art of healing. We embrace medicine as a practice that requires dedication, continuous learning and humility.

Teamwork: We get to know one another deeply as human beings so that we can appreciate each other’s strengths and understand how to support each person. We lean into sharing responsibilities together: the learning, the caring and the challenges of being a physician. We cultivate a positive learning environment by treating each other with generosity and gentleness to foster kindness. By collaborating across disciplines in innovative ways our teams are more enjoyable and effective.

Justice & Inclusion: We celebrate our common humanity and our unique differences; we listen and validate feelings while striving to understand our own biases and address them within ourselves and in the greater community. We pursue equitable healing and advocate for change in individuals, communities and the broader system as a form of justice for all — particularly the most vulnerable. We reach out beyond the walls of health care to achieve health for all.

Authenticity & Integrity: We strive to inspire each other to be aspirational physicians. We seek feedback to stretch, grow and challenge ourselves and one another productively, honestly and respectfully, because there is no limit to better. We are resolute in our focus to compassionately and holistically care for all people and recognize the importance of caring for ourselves. We are attuned to our culture, our collegiality and the importance of a fun, positive work environment.

Our program has been through a period of tremendous growth since its historical roots as a community program at the Travis County Brackenridge Hospital. We have always strived to provide the best care to the underserved in our community, and I am so proud of our faculty and residents who are deeply committed each day to this work.

The opening of Dell Med in 2016 brought new resources to achieve this mission, and many of these developments are what excite me about working here each day. The department leadership team is made of general internists who are transforming health care to focus on value. Our residents benefit from a diverse melting pot of faculty who have come from all over the country, attracted by a sense of purpose, a love of teaching, and the Austin and Dell Med communities. We have grown our programs to include the Advancing Care Transformation curriculum, a Primary Care track, eight new fellowships and global health partnerships in Kenya and Mexico. We have also expanded our care model to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin.

The heart and soul of our program is our residents and chief residents. Teaching and mentoring them is a privilege, and my primary motivation is to continuously improve their training experience based on feedback and new ideas from the program. Our residents’ care for our patients and each other is inspiring and is the foundation of our program, as is their work ethic, sense of responsibility and desire to learn and create a rich and safe educational environment. They embody our shared values of clinical excellence, teamwork, justice and inclusion, and authenticity and integrity. Though they can’t capture the culture and camaraderie for which we are most proud of, I hope these webpages introduce you to our curriculum, faculty and opportunities.

Sincerely,

Parker Hudson, M.D., MPH, FACP
