The Internal Medicine Residency’s Clinician Educator Track is a specialized pathway designed for internal medicine residents with a strong interest in medical education, teaching excellence and academic scholarship. This longitudinal track supports the development of future clinician educators who will shape the next generation of health care professionals.
Track participants benefit from interdisciplinary engagement across the Dell Med ecosystem, learning from nationally recognized faculty who are deeply committed to rethinking how medicine is taught and practiced. Situated in the heart of Central Austin’s vibrant academic and medical community, the program and track provide rich opportunities for mentorship, scholarship and the development of teaching excellence that prepares graduates to become leaders in clinician education.

The Clinician Educator Track prepares residents to:
- Deliver effective and inclusive bedside, didactic and small-group teaching.
- Develop and implement educational curricula.
- Engage in educational scholarship and quality improvement.
- Build skills in mentorship, feedback and learner assessment.
- Develop a personal teaching portfolio.
- Explore career paths in academic medicine and medical education leadership.

Curriculum Highlights
Longitudinal Educational Development
- Monthly Clinician Educator Track didactics: Topics include adult learning theory, curriculum design, bedside teaching, feedback models, learner assessment and more
- Teaching practicum: Supervised teaching sessions with real-time feedback from faculty mentors
- Workshops and electives: Interactive sessions in simulation, debriefing and leadership development
Mentorship & Scholarship
- Faculty mentorship: Each track resident will be paired with a dedicated clinician educator mentor
- Education scholarship: Residents design and complete an education-focused scholarly project, with guidance from experienced faculty
- Conference participation: Opportunities to present at regional and national academic medicine meeting
Teaching Opportunities
- Small-group facilitation for medical students and peers
- Lectures for medical students and peers
- Supervised clinical teaching on wards and in continuity clinics
Track Structure & Application Details
Eligibility
PGY-1 residents apply during the spring to start in their PGY-2 year.
Duration
The track spans PGY-2 and PGY-3 years.
