Welcome to the Child Neurology Residency program at Dell Medical School. This is a great time to become a child neurologist and an exciting time to begin residency training in Austin. We welcomed our first Dell Medical School class in 2016. Pediatric neuroscience is one of three designated focus programs in our children’s hospital, and the child neurology program is expanding. The child neurology program mirrors the medical school’s commitment to educate physician leaders and develop innovative models of health care and education.
We are committed to creating an exceptional learning experience designed to prepare each resident for whatever career in child neurology they pursue. Preliminary training in general pediatrics is provided in our well-established Pediatric Residency program. The child neurology residency is part of UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children’s. Created in 2019, this new program already boasts 20 full-time child neurology faculty member, including seven pediatric epileptologists, and continues to expand. Current faculty members’ clinical interests include epilepsy, headache, neuroimmunology, autism, stroke and vascular disorders, neuromuscular disorders and neurogenetic diseases. This wide array of interests ensures that each resident encounters a broad range of neurological disorders. Other important team members include specialists in pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, and pediatric neuropsychology. Our program also offers fellowship opportunities in pediatric headache and pediatric epilepsy and soon in pediatric neuromuscular disorders.
The child neurology program’s primary inpatient teaching facility is the 300-bed Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas. The hospital features a level I pediatric trauma center, a level IV neonatal intensive care unit and a level IV epilepsy center. We recently occupied one floor of a large outpatient pavilion that is connected to the hospital and provides ample clinical space as well as room for conferences and resident education.
Dell Seton Medical Center is the primary teaching hospital for Dell Med. It features a level I trauma center, a level IV adult epilepsy center and a certified stroke center. The medical school is also home to the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences, a program designed to develop multidisciplinary, patient-centered care models for individuals with neurological disease. Established by a gift from the Mulva Family Foundation, the Mulva Clinic is part of the collaborative scientific community of departments, centers and institutes on the adjacent University of Texas at Austin campus.
Austin is the 11th most populous city in the U.S. and has been ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News and World Report’s “Best U.S. Places to Live” survey. Austin is a fun, vibrant, socially conscious university city that is known for its live music scene, food trucks, cultural diversity and internationally renowned festivals such as South by Southwest. Nearby lakes and rivers as well as the beautiful adjacent Texas Hill Country provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
