The General Surgery Residency program curriculum provides a deep understanding of value-based, patient-centered health care delivery for the management of a variety of surgical diseases.

Curriculum Components

PGY-1 (Categorical/Preliminary)

  • 4 Blocks: Acute care surgery | Dell Seton Medical Center
  • 2 Blocks: Colorectal/foregut | Dell Seton Medical Center and Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin
  • 2 Blocks: Surgical oncology | Dell Seton Medical Center
  • 1 Block: Elective general surgery | Dell Seton Medical Center
  • 1-2 Blocks: Burn surgery | Dell Seton Medical Center
  • 1-2 Blocks: Vascular/cardiothoracic/transplant | Dell Seton Medical Center and Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin
  • 1 Block: Pediatric surgery | Dell Children’s Medical Center
  • 1 Block: Plastic surgery | Dell Seton Medical Center 

Preliminary interns have two months of elective and research time where they can focus on completing required rotations or electives tailored to their specialty (i.e., emergency medicine for anesthesia), as well as a rotation in the surgical intensive care unit.
