Fellows complete a core of four blocks of inpatient consultation in a medical-surgical hospital setting. Each block is 3-months duration and electives are coordinated across the year depending on the interests of fellows and availability of different clinical experiences.
Inpatient Rotations
Fellows complete inpatient rotations at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas and Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin.
The core inpatient consultation-liaison experience provides fellows expertise in evaluation and treatment of complex medical-surgical patients. The consultation-liaison team includes a variety of learners including medical students, non-psychiatric interns, family practice residents, advanced practice registered nursing students, and upper level psychiatry residents. As the year progresses, trainees take on increasing responsibility for triage of new consults, managing the team, and supervision of more junior trainees.
Fellows master core consultation-liaison inpatient care skills including pharmacotherapy, evidence based brief psychotherapies, and the role of liaison work.
Electives
Established electives exist in women’s mental and reproductive health, neurostimulation (electroconvulsive therapy/transcranial magnetic stimulation), complex primary care, and psycho-oncology. The program’s collaborative relationships across the medical center allow for the opportunity to create other electives based on the interest of each fellow and are possible in either outpatient or inpatient settings.
