Thank you for your interest in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency program at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Our program was accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in 2021, and our first residency class began in July 2022, at which time we began matching for R1 positions beginning in 2022 and 2023. The program is accredited for four residents per class and requires prior completion of a preliminary or transitional intern year.

Our training program is based at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin, which is the flagship hospital of the Ascension Seton hospital system in Austin. Residents will also significantly rotate at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, a 75,000-visit emergency department and urban Level 1 trauma center that is the referral center for all of Central Texas; Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, the largest children’s hospital in Austin; UT Health Austin, the imaging center for Dell Med; and at outpatient imaging centers operated by Austin Radiological Association, the largest private practice group in central Texas.

Residents will be exposed to the full breadth of radiology and have dedicated research months with the opportunity to conduct research at both Dell Medical School and UT Austin, the flagship university of The University of Texas System and a Tier 1 research university. Residents will also have the opportunity for a “mini-fellowship” during their R4 year.

Dell Med also features a common curriculum in its graduate medical education programs: Advancing Care Transformation, or ACT. All residents at Dell Med complete ACT’s Foundations in Care Transformation training, which emphasizes value-based care, quality improvement, equity, leadership and other key competencies in health systems science.

The Department of Diagnostic Medicine partners with Austin Radiological Association, or ARA, a large multispecialty radiology practice that has served the Austin community for over 50 years and continues to provide radiology services to a significant proportion of the Austin metropolitan area. Residents will rotate at ARA for some of their neuroradiology and breast imaging rotations as well as receive education on the business aspects of running a successful private practice radiology group.

Austin is one of the fasting-growing cities in the nation. The area’s population, totaling over 2 million people, is supported by a strong economy and an ever-expanding technology sector. Austin provides ample opportunities for a wonderful work-life balance with amazing outdoor activities and a vibrant nightlife. Austin is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” and hosts numerous yearly festivals, including South by Southwest and Austin City Limits.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to get to know our program. We look forward to having the opportunity to get to know you all (or y’all, as we say here in Texas) and providing you with an amazing four years of radiology training.

Bhairav Patel, M.D.
