Thank you for your interest in the Joseph Miles Abell Jr., M.D., Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery. Our program offers a truly unique opportunity to combine advanced training in adult reconstruction with meaningful involvement in the design and implementation of value-based care delivery systems. Few programs in the country are rethinking musculoskeletal care as comprehensively as Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin.
Fellowship training is based primarily at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, a high-volume, urban Level I trauma center with over 75,000 emergency department visits annually. As the primary referral center for Central Texas and the only adult Level I trauma center within a 60-mile radius, Dell Seton serves as a critical safety-net hospital for the region’s most complex and vulnerable patients. This environment provides exceptional exposure to orthopaedic trauma and complex reconstructive cases, including a high volume of revision arthroplasty.
The fellowship experience is further enriched by time spent at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin, a high-volume community hospital with 38 operating suites and more than 1,000 joint replacement procedures annually. In addition, fellows gain experience at UT Health Austin Ambulatory Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art facility focused on efficient, high-quality outpatient joint replacement — providing valuable preparation for modern practice environments.
From a surgical standpoint, the fellowship offers an exceptional breadth and depth of training. Fellows gain extensive experience in both primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, with revision exposure that is second to none. Training includes both conventional and robotic-assisted techniques, preparing fellows for the full spectrum of contemporary practice. Fellows are exposed to multiple surgical approaches — including anterior, posterior, lateral and ABMS approaches — through close collaboration with three core faculty members and two adjunct community surgeons. This diversity of surgical philosophies, techniques, technologies and implant systems ensures graduates are well prepared for independent practice in any setting.
Dell Medical School has recruited outstanding faculty from across the country, as well as leading surgeons from the Austin community. Fellows benefit from both the breadth and depth of this expertise, with a strong emphasis on mentorship and education. The program is led by Kevin Bozic, a nationally recognized leader in orthopaedic surgery and health policy with extensive experience in resident and fellow education.
Finally, the Austin area offers an exceptional quality of life. Consistently ranked among the top cities in the United States for living, working and recreation, Austin provides a vibrant and dynamic environment that makes spending a year here both professionally rewarding and personally enjoyable.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our program. We are proud of what it offers and look forward to the opportunity to welcome you to our community.
Sincerely,
Gurpreet Singh, M.D.
