About

Steve Steffensen, M.D., is a board-certified neurologist with additional subspecialty certification in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry, and a former active-duty Navy officer with more than 20 years of leadership experience in medicine and health innovation. He is a clinical associate professor in the departments of Neurology, Population Health and Medical Education at Dell Medical School. He also serves as a faculty physician at the UT Health Austin Comprehensive Memory Center, where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurocognitive disorders.

At Dell Medl, Steffensen directs the neurology clerkship for medical students and has played a central role in medical education as former co-director of the medical neuroscience (neuroanatomy) course for first-year medical students. He also helped establish one of the neurology residency programs at Dell Med, expanding graduate medical education opportunities in Austin. In addition, he serves as faculty director for the Health Leadership Apprentice Program and the Health Science Scholars honors program at The University of Texas at Austin, mentoring the next generation of health leaders.

Prior to joining Dell Med, Steffensen served as chief of innovation for the Military Health System and as a senior adviser to the Army surgeon general. He helped lead national initiatives in electronic health records, medical device integration and digital health technologies. Earlier in his career, he also worked with Johns Hopkins University on health innovation partnerships between academia and federal agencies.

Steffensen has been recognized for advancing patient care through technology, education and the medical humanities. His diverse experiences as a clinician, educator, health system innovator and military officer provide him with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in modern health care.
