Dermatology Residency: How to Apply

All applications received through ERAS will be screened and reviewed. If you are chosen for an interview or if the program needs additional information or documentation, you will be contacted via phone and email. Please do not call to inquire about the status of your application during this time.

Criteria for applying

All applications must be filed through ERAS according to its deadlines and requirements:

  • All applicants must register with NRMP
  • Positions will not be offered outside of the match
  • All applications must be submitted by November 1
  • IMGs/FMGs must be green card holders and be ECFMG certified


When are your interview dates?
We usually interview on Fridays and Saturdays in January. If you are chosen to interview, the exact dates will be sent to you.

What is the relationship between UT Dell Medical School and the University of Texas at Austin?
Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin received ACGME accreditation as an institutional sponsor and assumed sponsorship of all of the Austin residency programs January 1st 2015.

Do you have cut-offs for USMLE board scores?
Scores above the median on each step of the USMLE exam are preferred. Applicants must have passed USMLE Step 1 to be considered

Will you accept International medical graduates?
Yes. International medical graduates must have graduated in the last 5 years. All applicants must have clinical experience within the United States

How many and what kind of letters of recommendation are required?
At least 3 letters of recommendation should come from individuals you have worked with who can attest to your capabilities, personality and skills.
It is preferred that at least one of the letters is from a Dermatologist who has worked with you in a clinical setting.

Are personal statements required?

Do you consider MD and DO applicants?    
Yes, we consider all who apply. We do require USMLE scores, however.

Will you consider those who have completed previous residency training in other specialties?
Yes, we will.

Do you have specific requirements for what training your residents must have before starting dermatology?
All applicants must have completed or scheduled to complete at least 12 months of clinical training in one of the following types of programs: a transitional year (formerly called flexible first postgraduate year), or a first year residency in emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, or pediatrics.

Do you offer categorical positions in Dermatology (4-year slots)?
At this time we only offer PGY2-PGY4 positions. If you are interested, please apply to our local Transitional or Preliminary Medicine programs separately.
