Improving Quality of Life for Those With Nervous System Disorders

Due to its sheer complexity, the human brain is vulnerable to a staggering number of maladies. Across the entire lifespan, neurological disorders will result in more hospitalizations and lost productivity than any other disease group. The Department of Neurology is dedicated to meeting this challenge.

Areas of Focus

The department establishes inpatient services for patients with acute neurological illnesses and facilitates team-based clinics outpatient care. It also hosts training programs for medical residents in adult neurology, child neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The department is a cornerstone of the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences, established by a $50 million gift from the Mulva Family Foundation, and part of a collaborative engineering, computational and scientific community of departments, centers and institutes across The University of Texas at Austin campus.

The department works to analyze molecular and neural circuit mechanisms that underlie neurological disorders, to use these discoveries to develop new diagnostics and therapeutic modalities, to optimize interventions to improve efficacy and value, and to bring care to patients in their own communities.

Alongside the UT Austin Cockrell School of Engineering and College of Natural Sciences, the department designs unique systems for longitudinal, real-time analyses of disease dynamics — including accurate early warning systems in homes — using novel devices and user interfaces, sensor networks and machine-learning algorithms.
