The Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute is a poised to become a leading-edge center for training future ophthalmologists and providing patients with the best medical and surgical eye care possible.
The institute was created through a $20 million gift from the Wong family and is named for father-and-son ophthalmologists who are well-known physicians and philanthropists in Austin. They established the institute to further clinical and basic science research as well as academic teaching in ophthalmology and eye care.
UT Austin alumna Jane Edmond, MD, is the institute's inaugural director and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. A national leader on eye health and ophthalmology issues, Edmond will shape the curriculum needed to educate future leaders in ophthalmology and guide research leading to the improvement and preservation of vision.
