Advancing Ophthalmology Training & Patient Care
Created by a gift from the Wong family, the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute seeks to become a renowned center that provides patients with the finest medical and surgical eye care, furthers research to improve and preserve vision, and trains future leaders in ophthalmology. The institute is closely affiliated with the Department of Ophthalmology, and it opened its UT Health Austin clinic in 2020.
Focus Areas
In partnership with the Department of Ophthalmology, the institute supports a residency program (and in the future, a clinical fellowship) that aligns with Dell Med’s goal to train the next generation of physician leaders. Residents participate in rotations with community ophthalmologists, caring for patients in the private practice setting. These experiences will add unique value to the institute’s educational program.
As part of Dell Med’s work to deliver value-based, patient-centered care, the team is developing an ophthalmology service that will provide the best eye care to patients throughout the Austin community.
By forging collaborations with University of Texas at Austin scientists and local industry partners, the institute seeks to spearhead research initiatives targeting the preservation and improvement of vision.
