The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship program looks to recruit motivated applicants who have completed a general psychiatry residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education prior to entering the fellowship program. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, applicants must:

Applicants must be fourth-year general psychiatry residents in good standing at an ACGME-accredited program or must have completed an ACGME-accredited general psychiatry residency or child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship that qualifies them to sit for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology psychiatry examination. Applicants must also have U.S. citizen or permanent resident status and must have passed all steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensure Examination. Applicants must be eligible for a Texas license upon completion of residency and their school must be listed on the Texas Medical Board’s list of medical schools with substantial equivalence. 

To be eligible, applicants must: 

  • Be a PGY-4 general psychiatry resident in good standing at an ACGME-accredited program or have completed an ACGME-accredited general psychiatry residency or an ACGME-accredited child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship that qualifies them to sit for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology psychiatry examination.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status. 
  • Pass all steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensure Examination.
  • Be eligible for a Texas license upon completion of residency and come from a school listed on the Texas Medical Board’s list of medical schools with substantial equivalence.

How to Apply

Beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year application cycle, the Association of Directors of Forensic Psychiatry Fellowships has elected to begin using the Electronic Residency Application Service and the National Resident Matching Program. 

  • July 2, 2025: Applicants may apply to forensic psychiatry fellowships via ERAS
  • July 16, 2025: Forensic psychiatry fellowship programs begin to review applications on the ERAS platform and interview applicants via Thalamus or other optional platforms. 
  • August 6, 2025: NRMP match registration opens 
  • September 3, 2025: Ranking opens 
  • September 17, 2025: Quota change and withdrawal deadline. 
  • October 8, 2025: Rank order list certification deadline 
  • October 22, 2025 – Match Day 

All applications should be submitted via ERAS and should include the following:

  • Personal information 
  • Biographic information 
  • Education 
  • Experience 
  • Licensure 
  • Publications 

Standard ERAS Documents: 

  • Personal statement 
  • Medical school transcript 
  • At least three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from your current program director or, if you have completed training within the past five years, the director of the program from which you graduated most recently
  • Medical student performance evaluation
  • Photo 
  • Board scores 
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certificate if an international medical graduate

Non-Standard ERAS Documents: 

  • Supplemental forms
  • Publications 
  • At least two writing samples. These may be de-identified forensic assessments or reports, published articles or papers, or de-identified patient evaluations or discharge summaries. Please contact us if you have any questions about this requirement.

Interview Process

After application review, the program coordinator will reach out to offer interviews to selected candidates. Interviews occur between mid-July and September. Interviews are held virtually.
