About
Chris Moreland, M.D., MPH, practices at Dell Seton Medical Center and Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin in addition to his faculty roles at Dell Medical School.
He earned his M.D. from UTHealth Houston (McGovern Medical School) in 2005 and completed his internal medicine residency (primary care track) at the University of California, Davis, in 2008, followed by a generalist fellowship in primary care outcomes research and an MPH. He served as an academic hospitalist at UT Health San Antonio for a decade before joining Dell Med in 2020. A University of Texas at Austin Plan II Honors graduate (Class of 2000), his interdisciplinary background continues to shape his work.
Moreland’s career spans clinical service, medical education, faculty development and improving access for patients and the healthcare workforce. At UT Health San Antonio, he held undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education roles, including associate program director. He led the creation of the Program Evaluation Committee, co-developed the institution’s first Resident as Teacher elective, the internal medicine clinician educator track and the internal medicine medical Spanish elective. At Dell Med, he continues as an associate program director, overseeing recruitment and scholarship, with strong match outcomes. His teaching has earned multiple awards, including the Society for Hospital Medicine’s Excellence in Teaching Award and UT Health San Antonio’s Presidential Excellence in Teaching Award.
Since 2023, he has led the Division of Hospital Medicine, overseeing 30-plus clinicians working with learners across two hospitals and a transition-of-care clinic. The division collaborates across service lines and with hospital leadership at Dell Seton, Ascension Seton and Central Health, while preparing for the University of Texas Austin Medical Center.
As a deaf physician, Moreland’s research focuses on disability in medicine. His 2013 study was the first national examination of deaf and hard of hearing physicians’ career pathways. He co-designed the inclusion of disability items in Association of American Medical Colleges surveys, enabling further research in this area. He has served as president and board member of the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses, advisory board member for the Docs With Disabilities Institute, and co-chair of the AAMC’s Disability and Access Workgroup. He has contributed to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Medical Association educational resources and served on committees for Society of Hospital Medicine and Society of General Internal Medicine.
