A memorial service for Timothy “Tim” George, M.D., will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Austin Ridge Bible Church at 9300 Bee Cave Road in Austin. The public is invited.
George, a nationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, was a professor in Dell Med’s Department of Neurosurgery and led the school’s division of pediatric neurosurgery. He died Sunday while driving in an auto race in Florida.
George is remembered by John S. Kuo, M.D., Ph.D., the inaugural chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, as a trusted colleague.
“Tim was one of my earliest partners in putting plans together for the med school,” Kuo says. “He was so insightful about the dynamics and challenges in play, having already been here for many years when I arrived. Though he was quick to provide feedback, good and bad, he always had a wry smile on his face that showed you were his heart was. I will miss him greatly.”
After moving to Austin in 2006, George, 59, provided expert neurosurgical care for a large number of Central Texas children and families. He worked tirelessly to develop programs and teams at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas to advance neurosurgical care. He was also a champion of research in congenital malformations of the developing nervous system.
“I knew Tim as a friend and trusted adviser who provided thoughtful input in starting our department and developing the UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children’s,” says Clay Johnston, M.D., Ph.D., dean of Dell Med. “We have lost an exceptional surgeon and faculty member, and he will be greatly missed.”
Visitation
George’s visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin.
Memorials
In lieu of flowers, George’s family requests that donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or to the Dr. Timothy George Scholarship Fund for MCAT Preparation at the Austin Black Physicians Association (ABPA), where George was a founding board member. The scholarship is an effort to increase minority representation in U.S. medical schools. It is open to minority third- and fourth-year undergraduates at select Texas colleges and universities who plan to attend medical school.
