In the installment of the Department of Population Health Grand Rounds, Desmar Walkes, M.D., FAAFSM, presents “The Story of Funding Impacts on Public Health.” Walkes is a board-certified family physician and dedicated public health leader. She serves as the Local Health Authority for Austin-Travis County since 2021.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:

  1. Analyze the impact of funding changes on public health outcomes across global, national, and local contexts, including mortality trends and disease prevention efforts.
  2. Evaluate evidence linking public health investments to reductions in preventable deaths and improved population health, drawing on case studies and data-driven research.
  3. Assess the economic and operational implications of immunization programs and preventive health strategies, including cost-benefit analyses for organizations and communities.
  4. Identify strategies to mitigate risks associated with funding loss and declining vaccination rates, focusing on outbreak prevention, workforce health, and business continuity.
