PeriPAN ECHO Series: Managing Co-Occurring Health Conditions in Women With Behavioral Health Conditions

About the Event

This installment of the PeriPAN ECHO Series is “Managing Co-Occurring Health Conditions in Women With Behavioral Health Conditions.”

This series explores the intersection of maternal mental health and substance use disorder, sharing strategies to support pregnant and postpartum individuals with comprehensive, trauma-informed care. Sessions include a brief educational presentation, real-world cases and group discussion to address challenges and best practices. These exert-led discussions equip providers with the knowledge and tools to support maternal health and recovery.

The series is a program of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium’s Perinatal Psychiatry Access Network. Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes, or ECHO, is a telementoring model for building online communities of practice amongst health care providers or other professionals. The ECHO model utilizes didactic and case-based learning to accelerate the spread of evidence-based practices.

In collaboration with Be Well Texas and PeriPAN, the Maternal Health ECHO program is designed to equip perinatal health care providers with the necessary training, consultation and support to enhance care delivery. This initiative seeks to bridge knowledge gaps, strengthen provider capacity and improve maternal health outcomes across Texas.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:

  1. Apply evidence-based screening tools to accurately identify and assess mental health and substance use disorders in pregnant and postpartum women.
  2. Implement evidence-based treatments for mental health and substance use disorders.
  3. Develop skills to improve care coordination and support positive maternal and infant health outcomes.
  4. Understand the co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions associated with maternal substance use and develop strategies for their integrated and concurrent treatment.
  5. Recognize and address unique challenges in care access for women in underserved and rural areas.
