About the Event

In this installment of Pediatric Research Seminar series, Tom Brenna, Ph.D., presents “How Omega-3s Can Help Prevent Early Preterm Birth, Especially in Certain Ethnic Groups.” Brenna is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Dell Medical School.

Recent research in the Brenna Lab shows that a specific genetic variation plays a role in determining how much omega-3 is needed to prevent certain health issues, like early preterm birth. For those with this genetic variation, taking about 1,000 mg of omega-3 DHA per day during pregnancy may help reduce the chances of early preterm birth (before 37 weeks) and very early preterm birth (before 34 weeks) to normal levels.
