About the Event

Launch your Quality Improvement (QI) skills with the Department of Pediatrics’ inaugural year-long QI Collaborative—modeled after the IHI Breakthrough Series. The Collaborative will kick off with a dynamic two-day QI Workshop on October 16 and October 23, and will provide Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.

Through the Collaborative participants will:

• Build practical QI skills
• Design and implement a data-driven project (eligible projects may qualify for ABMS MOC Part IV credit)
• Produce a scholarly deliverable (abstract, poster, or manuscript)

At the QI Workshop participants will learn to:
• Distinguish quality improvement, quality assurance, and research
• Build a project charter around the IHI Model for Improvement’s three core questions
• Choose quality measures, data collection methods, and displays to track improvement over time
• Run Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles and decide whether to adopt, adapt, or abandon a tested change
• Engage stakeholders and structure teams to keep projects aligned and moving

Presenters:

Target audience: Fellow and faculty-level physicians from all departments

A maximum of 15 participants will be chosen to participate in the year-long QI Collaborative, taking place October 2026—September 2027, as well as the two-day QI workshop.

Apply by August 31: https://redcap.link/QIWorkshop…

October 23, 2026, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Learning objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

• Differentiate between quality improvement, quality assurance, and research, including the application of relevant IRB considerations to QI project design.
• Construct a QI project charter that addresses the three fundamental questions of the IHI Model for Improvement: What are we trying to accomplish? How will we know that a change is an improvement? What changes can we make that will result in improvement?
• Select appropriate quality measures, data collection methods, and data display techniques to monitor and track improvement over time.
• Design a PDSA cycle that includes a priori predictions, a structured data collection plan, and explicit criteria for determining whether to adopt, adapt, or abandon a tested change.
• Identify key stakeholders and apply evidence-based strategies for leadership engagement, team structure, and ongoing communication to sustain aim alignment, share progress data, and integrate team feedback.
• Integrate scholarly planning into QI project development from the outset, including the identification of dissemination pathways such as peer-reviewed manuscripts (SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines), poster presentations, and oral presentations.
