About the Event

In this installment of Pediatric Grand Rounds, Natalie Cerda, M.D., MPH, and Danielle Skala, M.Ed., present “Neurodiversity-Affirming Health Care: Effective Strategies for Optimizing Care in Medical Settings for Youth With Autism.”

Cerda is a pediatric developmental behavioral physician at Dell Children’s Medical Group. Skala serves as the senior clinical director for One of the Kids in Cedar Park.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:

  1. Define neurodiversity/ableism and their impact on the health care experiences of children with developmental disabilities.
  2. Describe health care professionals’ knowledge gaps in treating youth with autism and identify best practices for improving medical interactions and fostering inclusive care for this population.
  3. Identify and apply effective strategies, accommodations and interdisciplinary approaches in medical settings to enhance care for children with autism, addressing sensory differences, communication needs and procedural anxiety.

Target Audience:

  • Primary: Pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, family medicine physicians and pediatric residents
  • Secondary: Nursing and hospital Staff
