In this installment of Neurology Grand Rounds, Maitreyi Mazumdar, M.D., MPH, presents “Spina Bifida Risk and Prevention: Arsenic-Contaminated Drinking Water, Folate and Neurodevelopment in Global Contexts.” Mazumdar is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Harvard Medical School.

Objectives
By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:
- Describe sources, geographic distribution and health implications of arsenic-contaminated drinking water, with emphasis on prenatal exposure in Bangladesh.
- Assess evidence linking parental arsenic exposure and folate status to population-level risk of spina bifida in international studies.
- Explain how disruptions in folate-dependent metabolic pathways and arsenic-associated epigenetic changes influence neural tube closure.
- Apply current evidence to prevention strategies, including collaboration with public health partners to reduce the risk of spina bifida in global and resource-limited settings.

- Primary: Neurosurgeons, neurologist and other medical specialties
