The Extraordinary Learning and Teaching in the Clinical Setting series is a faculty development workshop that occurs weekly with the goal of exploring strategies for teaching. Sessions include peer-to-peer discussion, case studies, simulations and practice with feedback, drawing on evidence from the medical education literature.
Objectives
By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:
- Differentiate performance coaching from advising, mentoring, and evaluation, and identify when a coaching approach is most effective for learner performance improvement
- Discuss relationship-centered performance coaching skills and frameworks that integrate observation, learner self-assessment, and goal-directed action planning to support self-awareness and measurable improvement in high-stakes academic medicine scenarios
- Demonstrate performance coaching communication skills, including curiosity-driven questioning, reflective listening, and autonomy-supportive goal setting
