About the Event
The Center for Health and Environment: Education and Research (CHEER) Seminar Series highlights environmental health-related work at UT and in the Austin metropolitan area.
Gilbert C. Gee, Ph.D., presents “The Health of Philippine Emigrants Study: Designing a Natural Experiment to Study Migration.” Immigrants are typically healthier than their U.S.-born counterparts, but with time, the health of immigrants erode, typically attributed to “acculturation,” related to the adoption of “American lifestyles.” Yet, health also changes due to global secular trends. Indeed, obesity rates are rising worldwide, casting doubt on the veracity of acculturation effects. The Health of Philippine Emigrants Study was designed to study these competing hypotheses.
Gee is a professor and chair of the Department of Community Health Sciences in the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA.
