Clinical Training
Adult Neuropsychology
Adult neuropsychology fellows spend 50% of their time engaged in clinical work, 30% in research and 20% in didactic or supervision experiences.
The adult neuropsychology rotations are at the UT Health Austin clinics in the Health Transformation Building on The University of Texas at Austin campus. Fellows’ clinical work takes place primarily in the Comprehensive Memory Center at the UT Health Austin Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences.
The Comprehensive Memory Center is an outpatient dementia specialty center that serves adults and their families who have concerns about cognitive, behavioral or personality changes that may be indicative of neurodegenerative conditions. Fellows have the opportunity to learn about the full spectrum of dementia care within an integrated practice setting and value-based care model. The interprofessional team consists of specialists from neurology, geriatric psychiatry, neuropsychology, nursing, clinical social work and speech-language pathology.
Fellows also have opportunities to see patients from other centers at the Mulva Clinic, including the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center, the Bipolar Disorder Center and the Neurosurgery clinic.
Pediatric Neuropsychology
Pediatric neuropsychology fellows spend 80% of their time in clinical work and supervision and 20% of their time in research, didactics, and administrative experiences.
The pediatric neuropsychology rotations take place at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in the pediatric neurosciences department, which houses both inpatient and outpatient services, and outpatient clinics at nearby satellite locations. See the program brochure for details about the major and minor rotations. Examples of the areas where neuropsychology fellows may have the opportunity to rotate include:
- Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
- Children’s Blood & Cancer Center
- Neurodevelopmental Center
- Comprehensive Care Clinic
- Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Spina Bifida Clinic
- Neuromuscular Clinic
Additional Training
Throughout the two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology, fellows spend time conducting both clinical and research activities. The amount of each varies between the adult and pediatric programs.
A clinical day can follow various formats, such as a full neuropsychological evaluation, a more focused evaluation or consulting. In the second year, fellows may expect an increase in clinical productivity along with increased psychometry support.
Fellows complete two research projects, one each year throughout the program. At least one project must be a manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Adult neuropsychology fellows must submit two manuscripts, one each year.
Fellows also have opportunities to supervise a graduate student and/or psychometrist and to provide didactic instruction for a variety of students and trainees.
