About

Robert Schlechter, M.D., is an affiliate faculty member in the Department Surgery and Perioperative Care.

He has been a pediatric surgeon in Austin since 1984. He completed a general surgery residency at Tulane University and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at McGill University/The Montreal Children’s Hospital. He has served as chief of staff at The Children’s Hospital of Austin, as president of the Ascension Seton Medical Executive Committee, as trauma medical director at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and as the first surgeon-in-chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas from 2010 to 2016.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association. His professional interests in addition to pediatric surgery include medical decision-making, patient safety, human error and leadership development.
