About
Paul Kivela, M.D., MBA, is a clinical professor and the division chief of emergency medicine in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. He is an internationally recognized leader in emergency medicine.
Prior to joining Dell Med, he was a clinical professor of emergency medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He holds a B.S. and M.D. from the University of Illinois. He completed his emergency medicine residency training at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA and also completed a fellowship in administration in San Francisco. Kivela also earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee.
Kivela was elected and served as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians for the 2017-2018 year. He is a past chair of the Emergency Medicine Foundation, the largest emergency medicine research granting organization in the country. Kivela serves on the State of Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council.
Kivela has been the recipient of numerous national and international leadership awards, including the Weigenstein Award for outstanding contribution to emergency medicine, the Intercontinental Emergency Medicine gold medal and the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. He has been invited to speak at over 30 international conferences and 100 national meetings.
His areas of expertise include medical error reduction, alternative payment methodologies, innovative health care delivery models, leadership development and emergency medicine decision-making.
