Joydeep Ghosh, Ph.D., is a courtesy professor in the Department of Population Health and the Schlumberger Centennial Chair in Electrical Engineering and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.
He joined the UT Austin faculty in 1988 after being educated at IIT Kanpur (B. Tech ‘83) and The University of Southern California (Ph.D. ‘88). His research interests lie primarily in data mining and web mining, responsible AI, scalable machine learning algorithms, predictive and prescriptive analytics and applications to a wide variety of complex real-world problems, including health informatics. Ghosh has published more than 500 peer-reviewed research papers (with over 30,000 citations) and has received 16 Best Paper Awards over the years. He has been a plenary and keynote speaker at several venues including KDD, ICML, ICDM and ICHI and has widely lectured on intelligent analysis of large-scale data. He is an IEEE Fellow (2004), the 2015 recipient of IEEE CS Technical Achievement Award and the IEEE ICDM 2020 Award for (lifetime) research achievements in data mining, among other distinctions.
Ghosh has served as a co-founder, consultant or adviser to several successful startups as well as established companies. At present, he serves as the chief scientist of CognitiveScale, which was selected in 2018 to be among the 61 technology pioneers worldwide by the World Economic Forum, and is on the board of directors at AI-Global, a nonprofit dedicated to building responsible AI systems.
