Chelsi West Ohueri, Ph.D.

About

Chelsi West Ohueri, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Slavic and Eurasian studies with appointments in The University of Texas at Austin departments of African and African Diaspora studies and anthropology. She is also a courtesy assistant professor in the Department of Population Health at Dell Medical School.

As a sociocultural and medical anthropologist, West Ohueri is interested broadly in structural inequality and processes of racialization. Her ethnographic research is primarily focused on Albania and the Balkan region. She has also conducted research on chronic illnesses and heath inequality in the U.S. West Ohueri additionally conducts comparative research on the social aspects of health and illness, specifically examining race, health and embodiment. She teaches courses on health, illness and inequality in the College of Liberal Arts.
