Improving & Integrating Care

Attracting Top Doctors to Austin

Dell Med is directly or indirectly connected to attracting 560 new doctors to Austin since 2014. That’s about 1 in 8 doctors in Travis County.

From the influx of talent and expertise, Central Texas has gained care capacity in gastroenterology, basic and complex cardiovascular care, nephrology and more.

Building a World-Class Academic Medical Center

In 2023, The University of Texas System announced the monumental initiative to build The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Med.

It will include a new, state-of-the-art UT hospital, an MD Anderson Cancer Cancer and the resources of a globally recognized Tier 1 research university brought to bear on solving health’s most pressing challenges — all while setting a standard of excellence for integrated, multidisciplinary, patient-centered care.

Caring for the Community

At UT Health Austin, our clinical practice, 12,592 unique patients used MAP, Medicaid or Medicare — overall, about 43% of all unique patients. More than 1 in 4 are part of the safety-net population.

Dell Med Faculty in the Community

Of 350 faculty members employed by Dell Med, 267* — over 75% — work full or part time in the community with a range of clinical partners. This year, they will provide 435,000+ hours of care.**

Dell Med Trainees in the Community

Our 492 residents and fellows also play a critical role in providing care locally — more than 1.1 million hours of care at 90-plus clinics and hospitals.

Nearly 75% of trainee-provided care takes place at CommUnityCare Health Centers, Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, Dell Children’s Medical Center and safety-net settings.

Dell Med Students in the Community

Dell Med students spend 44 weeks on six core clerkships, rotating primarily at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin, Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas and Dell Children’s Medical Center.

In addition, students operate the C.D. Doyle Clinic, a free clinic in east Austin that provides care for un- and underinsured individuals.

Dell Med’s Growth in Research

Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research Rankings: Dell Med ranked 136 out of 141 medical schools in 2018, improving to 54 in 2024 in these rankings that use National Institutes of Health funding as a measure of important research activity.

Training the Workforce of the Future

Preparing Future Physicians

Dell Med has now graduated six classes from its M.D. program — about 280 new doctors.

In the most recent class, nearly 40% entered a primary care specialty, continuing a trend toward family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics for Dell Med alums.

Training Residents & Fellows

Graduate medical education in Central Texas is expanding: In collaboration with Ascension Seton, Dell Med has more than tripled its number of residency and fellowship programs — to 49 — since 2015.

Over that same period, the number of residents and fellows has increased by 90%.

More Doctors for Central Texas

Of the 651 graduates of Dell Med residency and fellowship programs who have immediately entered practice since 2015, more than 43% stayed in Central Texas. Nearly two-thirds stayed in state.

From Dell Med’s Class of 2025, 45% have stayed in Texas for residency, with 20% staying right here in Austin.

Community Initiatives

In 2018, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission contracted with Dell Med to lead a collaborative to redesign this facility that serves 26 counties for adults, 57 counties for adolescents and 75 counties for children.

This became an opportunity to reimagine not just a hospital, but the entire continuum of care for brain health, with Dell Med convening a team and delivering a master plan for just that.

Dell Med and Travis County are pursuing partnership opportunities to support a three-phased development of the “diversion ecosystem” to help prevent criminal justice involvement for people with mental illness and substance use disorders.

As the work continues, Dell Med is supporting data access, convening, planning and evaluation.

Jointly designed by the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition and Dell Med, the Permanent Supportive Housing Health Care Collaborative is bringing integrated primary and behavioral health support as well as stable housing for people with complex needs.

This model connects housing-first strategy to continuity-first care, offering a path out of crisis.

Supported by funding from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas, Dell Med is improving access to cancer screening and diagnosis, particularly for people with low incomes and other vulnerable populations.

In addition, Dell Med has a growing research partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center focused on advancing cancer care.

Dell Med’s M3 team provides longitudinal medical and behavioral health care — now co-supported by Central Health — to people living unsheltered in Travis County.

It shares leadership with Central Health’s Bridge Clinic, providing medical care to unhoused people instead of sending them to an ED for primary care.
