James Buntrock, M.S.

About

James D. “Jim” Buntrock, M.S., serves as the chief data officer at Dell Medical School, where he is responsible for the overall data strategy to manage, curate and use data to meet the organizational needs across clinical practice, education and research.

Prior to joining Dell Med, Buntrock held an executive leadership role in the Department of Information Technology at Mayo Clinic for 13 years. Over his 34 years at Mayo Clinic, Buntrock led major enterprise initiatives that transformed how data and technology support clinical care, research and education. His work included modernizing Mayo’s electronic health record, pioneering cloud computing strategies for patient-centered care, leading Mayo’s data partnership with Google Cloud, liaising with researchers across the organization and integrating data-driven artificial intelligence into clinical practice.

In addition, Buntrock provided technology leadership for several nationally recognized biomedical informatics grants: Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE), Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects (SHARPn), Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN), cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) and Patient Center Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

Buntrock previously directed an IT fellowship program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Mayo Clinic, and he served as an instructor in biomedical informatics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Buntrock received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Moorhead State University in Minnesota and his master’s in management science from Cardinal Stritch University in Wisconsin.
