About
Brian P. Kelley, M.D., FACS, completed his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine and his integrated plastic surgery residency and fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of Michigan. He returned to Texas to join the clinical and academic community at Dell Medical School and Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, the only Level I Trauma Center in Austin, where he specializes in upper extremity trauma and replantation.
Dr. Kelley’s clinical practice spans the full breadth of reconstructive plastic surgery, with particular focus on microsurgical breast reconstruction including DIEP flap and other autologous techniques; peripheral nerve surgery, including nerve repair, nerve transfer, and targeted muscle reinnervation and regenerative peripheral nerve interface procedures for amputation-related pain and neuroma management; complex hand and wrist surgery, including fracture care, tendon and nerve injury, arthritis, and replantation; and oncologic reconstruction following Mohs surgery and surgical oncology resections of the head, neck, trunk and extremities.
Dr. Kelley’s academic work includes peer-reviewed publications in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Journal of Hand Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and Hand Clinics. He is first or senior author on systematic reviews addressing autologous breast reconstruction in the setting of radiotherapy, perioperative considerations in microvascular reconstruction, postoperative pain management in hand surgery and breast sensibility following mastectomy. He has authored chapters in standard reference works including Grabb and Smith’s Plastic Surgery, Operative Techniques in Hand and Wrist Surgery, and the Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery.
His current research interests at Dell Medical School focus on outcomes related to optimization in reconstructive surgery, the integration of peripheral nerve surgery with advanced prosthetic technology and evidence-based decision-making in complex reconstructive pathways. He has presented his work at the annual meetings of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Peripheral Nerve and other national societies.
Dr. Kelley is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Society for Peripheral Nerve. He is committed to advancing the practice of reconstructive surgery through clinical excellence, academic contribution and the training of surgeons in Austin and across Texas.
