About
Alan Schalscha, D.O., currently serves as the chief medical officer for Central Health, the Travis County public hospital district that provides health care services to low-income residents in the Austin metropolitan area. The Central Health system, which includes CommUnityCare Health Centers, Sendero Health Plans and a diverse network of partners such as Integral Care and the Dell Medical School, aims to address health disparities and provide comprehensive care to more than 150,000 people in Central Texas.
In addition to providing health care to the underserved in Central Texas, Schalscha is passionate about serving underserved populations around the world. For nearly two decades, he has served as a volunteer board member and leader of DOCARE International, a medical outreach organization dedicated to providing health care to underserved communities globally. As mission medical director of DOCARE, he annually leads a team of 70-100 providers and students to Guatemala and was instrumental in establishing two permanent continuity clinics in San Andres, Colombia, and Tecpan, Guatemala. Schalscha was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Travis County Medical Society in 2019 in recognition of his work with DOCARE.
In his faculty role at Dell Med, Schalscha integrates health care into clinical education. Before serving as chief medical officer of Central Health, he was chief medical officer of Central Health-affiliated CommUnityCare Health Centers.
