About

Aaron A. Laviana, M.D., MBA, is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School. He is a urologic oncologist who specializes in bladder cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, penile cancer, complex kidney surgery and robotic surgery.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in biology and economics from the University of Notre Dame, Laviana completed his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top three of his class. He then completed his urology residency at UCLA, where he was recipient of the resident teaching award and award for excellence in academic urology.

Laviana next completed his Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship with David Penson, M.D.; Sam Chang, M.D.; and Joseph Smith, M.D., at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There, Laviana also completed his MBA at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Laviana has a particular interest in health economics and systems engineering and utilized his MBA to further investigate and improve upon the operational side of medicine.

At Dell Medical School, Laviana is pivotal in orchestrating the initiation and expansion of multiple cancer-related treatment protocols and integrating evidence-based medicine into clinical pathways. As the author of more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and several textbook chapters, Laviana’s research will continue to investigate the inefficiencies and bottlenecks in medicine to improve the value of health care at Dell Med and beyond. His scholarly work has previously been recognized by awards from the National Institutes of Health.

He currently serves as a member of the American Urological Association and Society of Urologic Oncology. Laviana is committed to improving health care delivery and access through research and by educating the future generations of academic thought leaders.
