About the Event

In this installment of the Virtual Town Hall for the Medical Community series, a panel of experts provide an overview on current infectious diseases, especially mpox, syphilis and HIV, and sexual health guidance with the goal to equip front-line physicians with latest insights and strategies to effectively tackle prevalent challenges.

The panel consists of:

  • Ellen Elmore, M.D., a physician with the Tuberculosis and the Sexual Health clinics at Austin Public Health.
  • Steven Klemow, M.D., an infectious diseases specialist and the medical director for the Kind Clinic in Dallas and TeleKind, programs of Texas Health Action.
  • Michael Stefanowicz, D.O., the associate director of sexual health programs at CommUnityCare Health Centers and an assistant professor in the Department of Population Health at Dell Med.
  • Desmar Walkes, M.D., the medical director and health authority for the city of Austin and Travis County.

The Virtual Town Hall for the Medical Society series covers current topics of interest for the Travis County medical community. It is produced by Travis County Medical Society and Dell Medical School. The series is co-hosted by TCMS President Tina Philip, D.O., and Dell Med Interim Vice Dean of Education Beth Nelson, M.D.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:

  1. Review the epidemiological response to mpox and discuss comorbidities.
  2. Describe the testing algorithm for HIV, interpret results, and appropriately counsel patients.
  3. Discuss the importance of mpox screening and vaccination to preparedness and prevention of an outbreak.
  4. Provide resources and tips on obtaining a sexual health history.
  5. Review screening algorithms for syphilis.

Target Audience

All health care providers within the Travis County medical community.
