About

Tera Howard, M.D., MPH, graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science in health and exercise science. She then attended Vanderbilt University, where she obtained both a medical degree and a Master of Public Health degree. She then completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Northwestern University. Before being recruited to Dell Medical School in 2020, Howard served on academic faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she served as the co-chair of the diversity subcommittee of the dean’s council for graduate medical education.

In addition to general obstetrics and gynecology, her specific clinical interests include operative vaginal delivery, vaginal hysterectomy and breastfeeding. Her specific research interests include disparities in medical education and disparities in breast feeding and she has published in these areas. She also has a specific interest in mentorship, particularly for those with backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. She has developed mentorship programs and received numerous mentorship and teaching awards.

Howard serves as the chair of the graduate medical education section of the Southern Group on Educational Affairs. She serves on the diversity taskforce of the Society for Academic Specialist in General Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is also an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
