Thank you for your interest in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship program at Dell Medical School. One of the most difficult qualities to determine about a training program, from the perspective of a prospective trainee, is the spirit and culture of a program. In summarizing our culture, I must start with the fact that we aim to train you to the highest standards set by our own mentors so that we do justice by their hopes placed on us as this generation of gastroenterologists and so that they can take pride in your ascendency as the next generation.

This is our promise to our profession and to you.

We will do this by challenging you intellectually and technically. You will learn to hone your senses to the most important clinical details yet not abandon the individuality that marks the humane art of medicine. You will learn how to forward our profession both academically and administratively; critically examining the work of yourself and others. You will learn to direct your attention so that it is both more focused and more expansive.

Even as we walk in the footsteps of tradition, we are not blindly rooted in its rituals. Clinical art must not cling to just the bedside but also expand across the myriad connections between patients and physicians in our age; we will teach you how to care for patients by acting on imperfect information collected through an array of sources. Our procedural skills must adapt to technology; we will teach you how to appraise new software and devices beyond claims made in marketing materials. Our field must resolve to improve sustainability; we will teach you how to assess the value of our care and how to eliminate wasteful practices.

We also hope to extend your longevity and happiness as a physician and consultant by showing you how to conduct your career in a fulfilling and rewarding manner in the short and long term; to not forget your own needs in service to our patients and our profession. We aim to train capable, flexible, energetic, moral gastroenterologists. Our goal is to conduct your training such that you will be proud of us as your teachers, proud of yourself as physicians, and proud of the service that you render onto patients and colleagues.

Welcome to our program.

Sincerely,
David Tang, M.D.
Program Director
