About
Karen de la Garza, M.D., is an assistant professor and hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine. She is also the assistant clerkship director for the Internal Medicine Clerkship. De la Garza’s areas of interest include medical education, student study support, mentorship and health equity. During her chief residency, she helped develop a novel internal medicine and cardiology co-management service and curriculum at a partner hospital that resulted in a more robust cardiology experience for residents. In clinical practice, she emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered care and works to address health disparities.
De la Garza graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M Internal University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2014. She obtained her medical degree at The University of Texas Medical Branch in 2018. She completed her internal medicine residency training at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin and successfully completed the Distinction in Care Transformation track in 2021. She then completed a chief residency year at Dell Seton Medical Center and Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin.
During her free time, De la Garza enjoys spending time with family and her cat and dog. Her hobbies include hiking, exercising, cooking and trying new coffee shops.
