Thomas Caven, M.D.

Thomas Caven, M.D., is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Medical Education at Dell Medical School. He graduated summa cum laude from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. from the Plan II Honors Program. He completed his medical education at the UT School of Medicine in San Antonio, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Postgraduate training followed at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he served as chief resident. In 1983 he began a private practice in family medicine in Austin, and in 1989 he joined Austin Diagnostic Clinic, where he served on the board of directors. Caven was a founding member of Travis Physician Associates in 1994, helping develop it into a large primary care group that merged with a Seton-based primary care group to form Seton Health Partners in 1998.

Starting in 2001, Caven served as chief medical officer and medical director at University Medical Center Brackenridge, a member of the Ascension Seton Family of Hospitals. He chairs the board of the Seton Medical Group, a 501(a) corporation, and he is the physician member of the Ascension Seton Network Risk Assessment Committee, performing risk assessment and medicolegal analysis. He also served as technology transfer officer for Ascension Seton, supporting patenting and commercialization of biomedical innovations for the health care network. In 2012 he was elected UMC Brackenridge Physician of the Year by the medical staff leadership.

Outside activities include membership on the External Advisory Committee of the University of Texas School of Biomedical Engineering and on the External Advisory Committee of the UT School of Pharmacy. He is also active in the emerging field of virtual immersive medicine and clinical research in its applications.
