About

Mark Levitan, M.D., is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. A New York native, Levitan attended the City University of New York. After receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, he completed both his medical internship and ophthalmology residency at the Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn. He concluded his full-time training in 1991 with a vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Levitan served as the retinal service director of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as well as a clinical assistant professor. He later joined the retina staff of the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and became part of the team responsible for teaching ophthalmology to residents. After moving to Texas, Levitan joined Austin Retina in 2002.

Levitan specializes in the medical and surgical management of all diseases of the retina, vitreous and macula, including macular degeneration, macular holes, retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy. He has also served as the principal investigator for several nationally recognized clinical research studies involving novel pharmacological therapies.

In addition to his clinical work, Levitan has lectured nationally, instructing retina specialists on the diagnosis and management of vitreoretinal pathology. He also provides a community service through patient education seminars and lectures to Central Texas medical professionals. Levitan is board-certified in ophthalmology and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists and the Texas Ophthalmological Association.
