About

Ammar M. Ahmed, M.D., is an associate professor in Department of Internal Medicine and Division of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery at Dell Medical School. He is also the program director of the school’s dermatology residency. He is a leader in dermatologic education both locally and nationally.

Ahmed serves on the steering committee of the Program Director Section of the Association of Professors of Dermatology, and he co-leads its diversity, equity and inclusion work group. He has served in multiple education-related committees of the American Academy of Dermatology, including as head of the medical dermatology work group for the academy’s curriculum task force. In this role, Ahmed spearheaded the development of a curriculum to guide educational activities of the nation’s largest dermatologic professional organization. Locally, he lead the development of the dermatology curriculum for the Mechanisms of Disease Module in Dell Med’s undergraduate curriculum.

A graduate of Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine, Ahmed completed his dermatology residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he served as clinic chief resident. In 2011, he became the third faculty member of the nascent academic dermatology program in Austin.

Ahmed practices general dermatology at Ascension Seton’s downtown Austin and Buda clinics and directs the dermatology service for CommUnityCare health system in Austin. He is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Ahmed has a special interest in disorders of pigmentation, especially vitiligo, and serves as head of the Central Texas Center for Pigmentary Disorders. He has served on the board of directors of the national Skin of Color Society. Ahmed is actively involved in research and has presented his findings at meetings around the world and in numerous peer-reviewed articles.

In his free time, Ahmed enjoys travel, pickleball and hiking the Greenbelt trails with his family.
