The Transitional Residency at Dell Medical School is a one-year residency designed for medical school graduates who have chosen a specialty that requires a general residency internship as a prerequisite.

The residency also partners with Dell Med’s Ophthalmology Residency to provide nine months of traditional PGY-1 training and three months of ophthalmology training during the PGY-1 year for residents who match in with the Ophthalmology Residency at Dell Med. Applicants who apply to ophthalmology and are selected for their residency will begin the 48-month training program in mid-June of the PGY-1 year, along with the other six Transitional residents, for a total of nine residents per year. The program anticipates that this growth will enhance the training for all residents during their first year of post-graduate medical education.

Eligibility

Applicants to the Transitional Residency program must also be applying to advanced training programs in anesthesiology, dermatology, diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology or physical medicine and rehabilitation when they match into the program. U.S. clinical experience (with no gaps in medical training of more than one year) is required.

International/foreign medical graduates must be green card holders and be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. They also must have graduated in the past five years.

Application Procedure

All applications must be filed through the Electronic Residency Application Service, and all applicants must register with the National Resident Matching Program. Applications must be submitted by Oct. 15.

All applications received through ERAS will be screened and reviewed, but positions will not be offered outside of the match. If chosen for an interview or if the program needs additional information or documentation, applicants will be contacted via email. Please do not call or email to inquire about the status of applications.

The program’s preferred qualifications include:

  • No failures on any step of the United States Medical Licensing Examination.
  • At least three letters of recommendation from individuals the applicant has worked with who can attest to capabilities, personality and skills.
  • A CV that includes volunteer service and academic experience and demonstrates a commitment to providing medical care to all patients and populations.
  • Personal statements are required.

The program recognizes that no application process is perfect and that each person is a unique individual, so a holistic review process will be used that takes account of individual circumstances, barriers and accomplishments as a whole. USMLE test scores and medical school grades are considered, but other factors play an important role in determining whether applicants will be successful within the program.

Interviews will be held either in-person or virtually based on future institutional policy.
