There is a significant shortage of both primary care pediatricians in underserved areas and of specialty-trained pediatricians in many parts of the country. To help meet this need, the Department of Pediatrics of Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is dedicated to:
- Increase and enhance educational programs in all areas of pediatric health care.
- Improve technological innovations targeting communication between physicians and family members of children within our community.
- Draw upon success and leadership of currently existing effective programs, such as our physicians working in the CommUnityCare Health Center of East Austin. They have pioneered a program in Austin called Centering Parenting. Groups of babies are cohorted by birthday and seen in groups of 5 to 8 starting at 2 months of age and continuing through 2 years of age. This follows a group called Centering Pregnancy which does the same in the community care setting for pregnant women. This type of innovative program provides true value to the communities we support.
