LIVESTRONG Wristbands Bring Dell Med School Art Competition to Life

AUSTIN, Texas — Tens of thousands of iconic yellow LIVESTRONG wristbands will serve as artists’ media in an art competition hosted by the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes of the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin.

The institutes’ Community Art Competition, now underway, encourages community members to provide ideas for artwork using the wristbands that in 2004 became iconic symbols of solidarity with those affected by cancer — the leading cause of death in Travis County. LIVESTRONG continues to distribute and sell more than 100,000 wristbands each year, with nearly 90 million wristbands distributed to date.

Idea submissions should illustrate the cancer experience and support those who have faced it. Anyone can submit a proposal, and finalists will receive as many as 25,000 LIVESTRONG wristbands to bring their vision to life. Finished pieces will be exhibited at an event in April, and the winning piece will be installed in Dell Med’s Health Discovery Building.

“Our work is intensely focused on centering cancer care around patients’ and survivors’ experiences,” said Gail Eckhardt, MD, director of the institutes and chair of Dell Med’s Department of Oncology. “Experiencing art so deeply informed by that mission in our new space every day will serve as a constant reminder of those we hope to serve.”

Ideas should be informed by the institutes’ vision — to become an accessible, patient-centered, collaborative and impactful cancer ecosystem — as well as its mission to radically improve people’s cancer experience and quality of life; revolutionize how cancer is treated; and reinvent the way cancer patients are cared for.

The institutes’ approach stems from a partnership with the Austin-based LIVESTRONG Foundation, which helped create the institutes in 2014 with a $50 million commitment. The institutes’ work builds on the knowledge gained from LIVESTRONG’s two decades of research with and service to cancer patients and survivors.

“Manifesting the LIVESTRONG spirit of solidarity and service to people affected by cancer through pieces of art is a brilliant idea, and we are excited to see the outcomes of this creative competition,” said Greg Lee, president and CEO of the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
