In this installment of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds, Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., presents “The Elusive Construct of Therapeutic Action.” Gabbard is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:

  1. List three components that make psychotherapy effective.
  2. Identify three factors that can impede therapeutic progress.
  3. Describe three necessary components of beginning an effective psychotherapeutic treatment.
  4. Explain how our understanding of therapeutic action has evolved over time.
